Start Forestry Research Boosting the forest economy's ability to compete on a sustainable basis, by developing genetic materials and forestry techniques that help increase yields and improve the properties of the wood produced, all at lower costs and with less environmental impact. Nurseries Able to produce 12 million plants a year, the nurseries supply the Group's forest planting operations. +130 species of ornamental plants and shrubs + Eucalyptus Globulus plants are grown at the Group's nurseries Eucalyptus saplings are tended and then transported for planting + 12 years life cycle Planted Forests Sustainable Management The Navigator Company manages forests covering around 120 thousand hectares and follows a policy of sustainable management. Eucalyptus Globulus Saplings are grown at Viveiros Aliança, the Group's nurseries, where the main species produced is Eucalyptus Globulus. 3 Forestry
Forestry Research Harvesting the Wood Logging Delivering the Wood The wood is delivered to the The Navigator Company's industrial units. + Biomass Preparing the wood The bark is stripped from the logs which are then processed into chips of a standard size. Wood chips 4 Pulp Manufacture
Forestry Pulp Manufacture The next stage in the process of preparing the wood consists of cooking it, to separate the cellulose fibres from the lignin. The result is a brownish-coloured raw pulp. White pulp + + Cooking wood in the digester Recovering chemicals and energy White liquor Black liquor + Bleaching the pulp Energy + Raw and bleached pulp Dry pulp + Dry Pulp Sector + Pulp in liquid form: slurry piped to paper mill 5 Paper Manufacture
Pulp Manufacture + Processing the Bleached Pulp Paper Manufacture Pulp is processed by the machinery into sheets of paper over three distinct phases: + Wet End The wet pulp is processed into continuous sheets. Pre-Dryer Water is extracted by pressing. + Post-Dryer Moisture is evaporated by using heat. + + + 60min Jumbo Reel The paper is wound on the reeler into jumbo reels. It takes around 60 minutes to produce one jumbo roll of paper weighing 80 tons. 6 Processing and Dispatch
Processing and Dispatch Processing the Paper Interesting facts about paper manufacture + Processing the Paper Reamer The paper is sorted into stacks of 500 sheets: these are called “reams”. Ream Wrapping Reams are wrapped, packaged and then palletised. Dispatch The Group's products are dispatched by road, sea or rail. We export to 123 countries around the globe. Learn more +
